Programs in psychology are offered through several departments and colleges at the University of Minnesota. Field of Study: Forensic Science

Introduction
Forensic science programs prepare people to examine evidence found at a crime scene. Students learn to study physical evidence such as blood, DNA, and fingerprints. They also learn to use many laboratory tools to collect and test data.
Overview
Forensic science programs teach you to "listen to the dead." You examine trace details such as skin, hair, and clothing fibers. You examine DNA, blood, and fingerprints. In the case of a murder investigation, you study wounds, patterns of blood loss, and the amount of decay. However, forensic science is more than just murder investigations. Perhaps most importantly, forensic science teaches you to determine if a crime occurred in the first place.First and foremost, forensic scientists are scientists. This means that most of the courses in forensic science programs are science-related courses. You take several chemistry courses, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. You also take biology, physics, genetics, and anatomy courses. In addition, you study methods of investigation and how to analyze different types of evidence. This can include collecting, transporting, and storing evidence.In fact, many programs require you to take archeology courses that teach research methods used on digs.
About 50 four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's degrees in forensic science. Many also offer graduate degree programs. Typically you receive a bachelor脝s degree in forensic science in four years. Several community colleges offer two-year programs in the technical aspects of forensic science (such as lab analysis) that can be transferred to a four-year college or university. Graduate programs take from two to five years after you finish your bachelor脝s degree."

Biomedical sciences is an academic program designed to prepare students for advanced study in medical, dental, veterinary or graduate schools as they pursue careers in health care or biomedical research. Faculty from across the basic science disciplines, within and outside of the college, offer a diverse curriculum as well as research opportunities for students. In tracking through a highly flexible curricular structure, students will have access to myriad scientific professionals and educational experiences.
For the past twenty years, researchers in the biomedical fields have enjoyed rapid gains in employment due, in part, to the advances in biotechnology and an increase in staff in new medical research industries. Continued employment growth will occur with the increased need for more research in many areas of health care, including AIDS, diabetes, cancer and neurological disorders. Courses and concentration options within biomedical sciences are designed to attract students interested in the broad spectrum of medically related jobs, and to provide a knowledge base and the technical skills required to pursue their chosen careers.

Requirements for the BS degree in biomedical sciences

The curricular requirements for the BS degree in biomedical sciences are very flexible, consisting of a life sciences core and a broad range of flexible options. The life sciences core is designed to provide the student with a strong grounding in mathematics and science, a complement of liberal arts in preparation for a particular career path, e.g., entry into medical/dental/veterinary school graduate studies, or a research position in an applied area of biomedical science. Upon completion of the life sciences core, a series of concentration areas are available in which the student, in consultation with an academic adviser, may select and complete a series of required and elective courses. Concentration areas include focused study in forensic science, professional studies (premedical, predental or preveterinary), exercise science and pathology. Students also may choose to use elective credits to engage in undergraduate research with a faculty mentor and/or pursue a secondary field of study through declaration of a minor, e.g., in the liberal arts (communications, psychology, public policy, foreign language, etc.) or sciences (statistics, biochemistry or imaging science), or possibly a second major.

Biotechnology is most briefly defined as the art of utilizing living organisms and their products for the production of food, drink, medicine or for other benefits to the human race, or other animal species. Technically speaking, humans have been making use of biotechnology since they discovered farming, with the planting of seeds to control plant growth and crop production. Animal breeding is also a form of biotechnology. More recently, cross-pollination of plants and cross-breeding of animals were macro-biological techniques in biotechnology, used to enhance product quality and/or meet specific requirements or standards. The discovery of microorganisms and the subsequent burst of knowledge related to the causes of infectious diseases, antibiotics and immunizations could probably be counted among man’s most significant, life-altering discoveries.
However, the most modern techniques in biotechnology owe their existence to the discovery of DNA and several techniques essential for gene cloning. Current scientific methods are more specific than historical techniques, as scientists now directly alter genetic material with atomic precision, using techniques otherwise known as recombinant DNA technology.?

Biotechnology in Industry
Different biotechnological advances can be found in nearly all sectors of industry today. There are, of course, the obvious medical, pharmaceutical and food industries. Advances in biotech are being used to determine cause and effect of various diseases and are used in the production of drugs. The production of foods is enhanced by biotechnological advances that improve crop yields, introduce in-situ insect resistance and provide new ways of food preservation. Technological advances also include biodegradable packaging and built-in bio-indicators of food contamination. In the environmental sector, biotech has played a role in remediation of contaminated land, water and air, pest control, treatment of industrial effluents and emissions, and acid mine drainage.

Biotechnological Advances and the Human Race

Moral debates in bioethics continue to surround the field of biotechnology. The public response to issues such as the value of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), versus the risks involved in their release into the environment, more-or-less quenched the enthusiasm of the bioremediation industry for GMO research, in the early 1980’s. Genetically modified foods (GMFs) continue to be produced, but with more and more governments clamping down on production and distribution and answering calls by the public demanding strict testing and labeling procedures.
Exciting new developments are being made in bio-fuel research, at a time when fossil fuel prices as going through the roof. However, the question of whether a diminishing supply can meet the ever-increasing demand is under debate by those who don’t believe the fossil fuel crisis is imminent. If they are correct, there is still some question of whether the cost of biofuel research and development is worth the effort.
Finally, there are the highly publicized and emotional debates surrounding the use of human embryos and stem cells for genetic research. Although the benefits of such research are obvious to most, the cost to human rights, morality and religious integrity are too high for some.

The Current State of Affairs

Despite on-going debates and occasional road-blocks, the biotech industry continues to persevere. Anyone looking for a career in biotechnology can choose from a wide variety of scientific and non-scientific disciplines, ranging from molecular genetics to chemistry, to business management and law. Almost every aspect of human life is touched by biotechnology. We continue to look for ways to improve our health, increase food production with an eye to feeding the poor in less industrialized countries, and clean up our environment. Biotechnology offers more environmentally sound solutions to the onslaughts of the industrial revolution, and a wealth of hidden answers to our most intriguing medical questions. For those reasons, biotech research will carry on and the industry is here to stay.
